Where and How to Start the Viridian City Challenge in Pokemon Radical Red

The battle can be started very early. When you reach Viridian City after giving Professor Oak his package, this is when you can start the battle. The teacher NPC you want to battle is located north of the Pokemon Center.

How Does the Battle Go?

Teacher asks you for a battle in viridian city

The teacher will have six Pokemon and all of them are Shedinja around level 100.

You, on the other hand, will have to choose three out of the six Pokemon available, and they’re around level 5. The goal is to beat all six Shedinja, but the challenge here is how you can pull that off.

Keep in mind that they are all level 100, and you only have three level 5 Pokemon. That’s where we come in with this guide to get you through it.

The first thing to do is to choose the three Pokemon in order:

  • First: Skarmory
  • Second: Aron
  • Third: Gible
The right order of the pokemon to be used

For the rest of the guide, we will tell you what to do and what happens in each specific turn.

What to Do in Each Turn of the Battle

Turn 1: Skarmory uses Stealth Rock

Turn 2: Skarmory Dies (Swap Out Aron)

In this turn, regardless of what move you choose, Skarmory will die. Swap out Aron next.

Turn 3: Aron uses Roar (5 Shedinja Will Die)

Aron must use Roar in this turn, which will remove the current Shedinja. A new Shedinja will be sent into battle, and this time Stealth Rock’s effect will take place.

Stealth Rock will instantly kill the Shedinja, and the next four Shedinja being sent out will also automatically die. The last one will not be killed, which leads to the next turn.

Turn 4: Swap Out Gible (Gible Will Die but You’ll Win)

Send out gible

Change out Gible and Shedinja will instantly knock it out. The last Shedinja will be hit by Stealth Rock, killing it instantly. This leaves Aron in your party as the sole survivor, and you’ve won the battle.

Reward for Beating the Viridian City Challenge

Using the pokevial in the overworld

The reward you get is called the PokeVial. This item will allow you to heal your Pokemon team wherever you are. This means that you don’t need to go to any Pokemon Center to heal up and is available for use for six charges.

If you run out of charges, you can just go to any Pokemon Center, and if you heal up, your healing charges will be refilled again for free. This is a very handy item to get early in the game.

Just press L and choose the PokeVial option to use it.

In Closing

This battle can be really tricky and challenging. Having a level 100 Shedinja is bad enough, but these bad boys have high speed and will always attack first.

Now you know how to do the Viridian City challenge in Pokemon Radical Red and get that useful PokeVial.

This is just one of several battles that involve a little problem-solving. Another one is the Move Maniac puzzle battle, but that’s on a whole different level of thinking.

Having the PokeVial is a very good boon to have, so don’t forget to complete the challenge to claim it.
