The bike is a form of transportation that the players can access at any given time when they already have it in their inventory.

Players can even put it on the SELECT button that allows them to use the bike right away without opening the menu.

The bike allows the players to move faster compared to walking or with the Running Shoes on, and that’s pretty much it.

Requirements to Get the Bike

Mauville location on the map

The only thing you need to do is progress the story to where you arrive in Mauville City. This is after you’ve defeated the first 2 Gym Leaders.

You don’t need to do anything in particular, but just talk to the bike shop owner Rydel and he’ll make you choose from one of the two bikes.

Differences Between the Acro and Mach Bike

Acro Bike

This bike focuses on acrobatics and tricks. These tricks can include bunny hopping and wheelies.

Hopping and Wheelies allow the player to access special or hidden areas that can’t be accessed normally.

A few good examples are the images below where you can hop on broken bridges to travel or go up a path.

How to Perform Tricks With Acro Bike

  • Hold the B button for more than 2 seconds to do a Bunny Hop. Use the directional buttons if you want to jump on the broken bridges.
  • Hold the B button for less than 2 seconds and you can do a Wheelie.

Mach Bike

This bike is all about speed because the Mach Bike is faster than the Acro. This bike may not be able to do tricks, but it can through mud slopes and cracked tiles.

This is important in some areas because you can access some areas where you can’t with the Acro Bike.

Changing Your Bike

You don’t need to worry about which bike you choose. The ability to change the bike is possible, but you have to go back to Rydel for it.

Simply head back to Mauville City, talk to Rydel and he’ll change your bike anytime.

There’s no requirement for this and when you have Fly at this point, you can go back anytime and change bikes for your needs.

Important Locations Where a Bike is Needed

Seaside Cycling Road

Once you have any of the bikes, accessing the Seaside Cycling Road is made available. You couldn’t do it earlier when you were just walking.

This road is sort of a shortcut but is also littered with trainer battles. It’s perfect if you need money and experience.

Safari Zone

There are areas in the Safari Zone where you can access with the right bike.

You can get a Solar Beam TM when using the Mach Bike. For the Acro Bike, you can get a Calcium.

The Sky Pillar

This is the big one and probably a good reason to get the Mach Bike. This is where players will battle Rayquaza.

Going up the pillar requires the Mach Bike due to the parts where there are cracked floors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have both bikes at the same time?

It is impossible to do so. You can only own one bike at a time, which is why changing them back at Rydel is what you have to do.

Is it possible to beat the game without the bikes?

The answer is yes. You don’t need to through the Seaside Cycling Road in the main story. A lot of the areas where the bikes are required are optional.

Even Rayquaza is optional, so you don’t need the bike to finish the game. It can be tedious since you cannot move very fast, but it is possible.

Which is better to own? The Mach or Acro bike?

It depends on which area you want to traverse. If you don’t care for these optional areas, then the Mach Bike is the way to go.

Where are some areas in Pokémon Emerald that require a bike?

Sky Pillar: You need the Mach Bike to cross cracked floors.
Safari Zone: You can use both bikes to access different areas with unique items.
Seaside Cycling Road: You need any bike to use this shortcut between Mauville City and Slateport City.

In Closing

The Acro or Mach Bike in Pokemon Emerald can be very useful. Choose the Mach Bike if you just want to get through the story.

It has its purposes, but the freedom to change bikes is always a welcome addition.

The fact that you can choose between two bikes in Emerald and the other Gen 3 games is such a fun addition.
