Different shards have different uses, and they are never the same for each game. The Red Shard, for example, in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, these shards are used to trade for a TM11 Sunny Day.

In Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, the Red Shards are used as currency used to pay for Move Tutor services.

Pokemon Radical Red has these shards as well, and they all serve the same function. We’ll teach you how to get shards in Pokemon Radical Red, continue reading.

What Are the Shards Used for in Pokemon Radical Red?

The red, blue, and green shards can be used to exchange for a starter Pokemon Egg. You need to go to the Pokemon Mansion in Celadon City (image above).

Once inside, talk to the old man NPC, and he’ll trade a Red Shard for a fire starter, a Blue Shard for a water starter, and a Green Shard for a grass starter egg.

Trading the shards for pokemon starter eggs

All of them are Pokemon Eggs, so you need to walk around hatching them. It is also at random, so the starter Pokemon Egg you got could be from any Generation. For example, it could be a Charmander first and a Tepig next.

You can exchange as many shards for Pokemon Eggs as you want.

Things You Need Before Getting the Shards

Before you can collect shards, there are a couple of things that you need:

Get Access to the Pokemon Mansion

You can get those shards early on, but there would be no point in harvesting them until you have access to the Pokemon Mansion in Celadon City.

You will have to progress the story until the 4th Gym.

A Pokemon that has Thief

You need a Pokemon that has the Thief move.

The thief move

The move allows you to steal the shards from the enemy Pokemon that holds them. That way, you don’t need to catch the Pokemon just to get the shard.

While it isn’t entirely needed, having a Pokemon that knows Thief makes things easier.

These shards are held by specific Pokemon in each location. Not all of them may hold a shard so it’s still by chance.

Catch the Pokemon to get the shard or, as we stated, just use Thief to find out if they have a shard or not. After you get the shard, just run away or knock out the Pokemon.

You will need an Old Rod to do this. If you don’t have the Old Rod, then the fisherman outside the Pokemon Center in Viridian City will give you one.

In Closing

It’s very convenient to get some starter Pokemon even if you have to hatch them from eggs.

Now that you know how to get shards in Pokemon Radical Red, you can harvest and exchange a lot of them. The question is if you want to go through all this trouble or just use cheats.

Unfortunately, using the Pokemon modifier cheat isn’t advisable. That’s because the modified Pokemon will not hold a shard. Just use the item modifiers if you want to by all the grind.
