What Is a Legendary Pokemon?

A Legendary Pokemon is a unique Pokemon that can only be caught on special occasions. 

In all the games, there is usually one chance of capturing a specific Legendary Pokemon. It doesn’t come out like a regular spawn or encounter. 

There are also certain conditions in the story that you need to do first to unlock some of them.

In of gameplay, a lot of these Legendaries do have something unique. They either have a unique move or ability that no other Pokemon have. 

It’s also a grueling task to catch these Legendaries, since most of the time you’ll be spending a ton of balls.

Powerful as they are, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Legendaries are the best in the game. It still boils down to how the player utilizes them. 

Like regular Pokemon, Legendary Pokemon may also have weaknesses to other types and in Pokemon Emerald, it’s possible to beat a Legendary by using a strong non-legendary Pokemon. 

Pokemon Emerald: Hunting Down Legendaries

Before we even begin hunting some Legendary Pokemon in Emerald, there are things that you need to keep in mind:

Story Progression

All the Legendary Pokemon will be available when you play the game’s story. Some of them are also available post-game, so you need to finish the story first by becoming Hoenn League’s Pokemon Champion. 

To sum it up, you can’t rush them if you’re after Legendaries from the beginning.

Stocking Up on Poke Balls

Naturally, when you’re going to catch Legendaries, you need a ton of Poke Balls. By the time that you encounter your first Legendary, you may have a lot of Poke Balls stored. 

If you have Ultra Balls stored away, you can use them as these are most effective and preferred for catching Legendaries. If you are low on funds, you can buy some Great Balls because they’re cheaper, but they are less effective compared to Ultra Balls. 

Regardless, use every available Poke Ball you have. There’s always the Master Ball, but more on that later.

Get Some Repels

This one is a bit optional because Repels just make your hunt easier. You’ll avoid fighting some random encounters as you’re traversing the Legendary Pokemon’s location. 

Get Max Repel if you have money to spare so that it becomes super effective.

Save Before Fighting the Legendary

When you’re at the Legendary Pokemon’s lair, save all the time before you fight it. That way, in case you fail to catch the Legendary, just reset and load. 

It’s a pain if you lose all of your Poke Balls and those Repels. The save file allows you to just reload where you currently are and fight again.

This is a detailed guide on where and when you can encounter the specific Legendary Pokemon.

Rayquaza

Guide for Catching Rayquaza in Emerald:

Rayquaza will be available after the scene where it comes out to end the fight between Groudon and Kyogre.

It will be located in the Sky Pillar which is east of Sootopolis City. You need to beat the 7th Gym Leader Juan first before you can catch Rayquaza. 

You don’t even need to beat the last Gym Leader and Elite Four to battle Rayquaza.

Going up the Sky Pillar is a bit of a puzzle, but the only thing you need is the Mach Bike. There are no HMs needed but watch out for the floor tiles. 

Those floor tiles will break, causing you to drop to the previous floor. Once you reach the top, Rayquaza is open for you to fight.

Battle Strategy:

When you have Mudkip as your starter, you can use Swampert as a main attacker against Rayquaza. 

The Level 70 is a bit of a hurdle, but Rayquaza can be toppled with a slew of Ice moves that Swampert has. 

It’s also somewhat tanky, so it can withstand the attacks from Rayquaza. Additionally, If you have a Dragon Pokemon like Altaria, Salamence, and Flygon, then some good Dragon-type moves can help.

Banette is a good Pokemon against Rayquaza with Spite. Rayquaza’s PP numbers are small, so using Spite can reduce its moves to zero very fast. 

Banette is also encountered in the Sky Pillar, so catching one is a good idea. 

Magneton could also be a good bet since it is a Steel-type and Raqyuaza’s attacks won’t be able to damage it. On top of it, Magneton can use moves to Paralyze Rayquaza. 

Sadly, the Electric moves won’t be doing much damage to Rayquaza, since its Dragon typing neutralizes the weakness of its Flying typing.

Groudon

Guide for Catching Groudon in Emerald:

Groudon can be fought after the battle with the Elite Four. In order for you to find it first, you need to head to the Weather Institute. 

Talk to the scientist on the second floor to get a weather report. The report will determine where Groudon is. 

When the scientist tells you that there is a drought in any of the locations, that means that the Terra Cave is there. 

These locations (presented in the image above) are Routes 114, 115, 116, and 118. 

The Terra Cave randomly spawns, but the scientist will tell you which route it is. Terra Cave itself is easy to navigate and you don’t need to worry about puzzles.

IT IS IMPORTANT that you do not go too close to Groudon in its lair. 

The battle will automatically start, so save first before moving in close because you might trigger the fight to start.

Battle Strategy:

Swampert is another ideal Pokemon to deal with Groudon. Armed with powerful Ice and Water moves, Swampert can attack and tank Groudon. 

The only danger is Groudon’s Solar Beam because Swampert will receive a lot of damage. The good thing is that it takes one turn for the attack to build up. 

You can swap out Swampert with another Pokemon that is resistant to Grass attacks to tank the Solar Beam.

Groudon’s other moves are also not effective to Swampert like Fire Blast and Fissure. Altaria is another good choice. 

Being immune to Ground attacks and can unleash Ice attacks as well to penetrate Groudon.

This Legendary isn’t too hard to fight, a turtle approach is not bad, since its moves don’t have high amounts of PP, anyway.

Kyogre

Guide for Catching Kyogre in Emerald:

Much like Groudon, you need to head to the Weather Institute. The weather report you’re looking for would be heavy thunderstorms. 

The locations (marked on the map in the image above) are Routes 105, 125, 127, and 129. Going to the Marine Cave requires Surf, so have a Pokemon for that. 

Once inside, it isn’t hard to navigate and you’ll be in Kyogre’s location to start the fight.

Battle Strategy:

Kyogre is balanced when it comes to its defense and it has a decent offense. 

Sceptile is good because the only dangerous move Kyogre has is Sheer Cold. The upside is that Sheer Cold has low accuracy, so it’s a high-risk-high-reward move, but you’ll get screwed once it hits.

Use Sceptile’s powerful Grass moves to dish out at Kyogre. Using an Electric-type can work, especially bulky ones like Magneton. 

Paralyze Kyogre and bombard some good Electric moves. Sadly, Grass and Electric moves are the only ones effective against Kyogre. 

Have some backup Pokemon just in case Sceptile and your Electric Pokemon faints.

The Regis 

In this part of the guide, we’ll be dealing with the Regis. Before we go to each Regi, unlocking them is a major pain. 

You need to have a Wailord in the first slot in your party. The Wailord could also learn Surf and Dive, which are useful for entering the Sealed Chamber. 

The other Pokemon is a Relicanth, which should be situated in the sixth or last slot in your party.

Surf east of Pacifidlog Town and head to the part where you can use Dive. It’s easy from there as you can just enter the room with the Braille. 

Once you’re there, start the event (on the image on the right below).

If you have the Wailord and Relicanth in the right positions, the cave will shake, indicating that the Regis are now available to fight, and their guides are below.

Regice

Guide for Catching Regice in Emerald:

Regice is located in the Island Cave. Simply Surf north of Dewford and before you reach Route 105.

There is also a trick to opening the door where you have to move counterclockwise beside the walls. Don’t step out or else the door won’t open. You can see a guide on the image below.

After that, you’ll be inside the chamber where Regice is waiting.

Battle Strategy:

Regice isn’t that tough because you encounter it as it is level 40. Blaziken is a good one to fight since it is Fire and Fighting-type since it is weak to those being an Ice-type. 

It’s not that hard of a fight, and you can have backup Pokemon that are Fire or Fighting. Regice also doesn’t have any lethal attacks, and it’s a very straightforward fight. 

It is important that you do not kill it and save the game before the fight. It will not respawn again, so just load the save file that you have.

Regirock

Guide for Catching Regirock in Emerald:

Once the Sealed Chamber is open, head to the Desert Ruins just located north of Route 105. You may have seen the Ruins previously, but the door was closed. 

Enter the cave and below on the image you’ll see that you need to interact with the Braille. After that, move left two times and down two times. 

Then, use ROCK SMASH where your character is facing and the door will open.

Battle Strategy:

This is another easy fight to win as it has the same moves as Regice except for the Rock Throw. 

To make it simpler, Regirock has a ton of weaknesses. Use Blaziken if you want to use Fighting moves. Use Swampert for Water and Sceptile for Grass moves. 

All three starters also have access to Ground-type moves which makes Regirock super weak to them. 

Have any other backup Pokemon to finish the fight as Regirock also isn’t strong in offense.

Registeel

Guide for Catching Registeel in Emerald:

The last of the Regis is located in the Ancient Tomb. It is located north of Route 120 and the way to open the door is to just stay in the middle of the room (image below). 

Once in the position, simply use Flash and the door opens up, leading to Registeel.

Battle Strategy:

If you have Blaziken as your starter, this fight will be easy. Registeel is weak to Fire, Fighting, and Ground, which are all usable by Blaziken. 

It has a lot of resistance to other types, so those three types are what you should be using. Having some backup Pokemon with those types can be beneficial because this isn’t a hard fight as well.

Latios and Latias

You can only get one of them during your Emerald run. After you beat the game for the first time, you’ll be teleported back home. 

There will be a scene with your mom and dad talking. Dad will then give you the SS Ticket and leave. 

Mom will tell you to watch the news and it ends with mom asking you what color was the Pokemon in the news. Choosing red will give you Latias and blue will give you Latios.

Once you’ve made the choice, stack up on some Poke Balls and Max Repels. Latios and Latias are roaming Pokemon, so they will encounter you on the overworld map. 

They won’t appear in caves or inside encounters. Use the Max Repel and make sure that the Pokemon in the first slot of your party should be around level 13 to 39. 

Latios or Latias will not appear if the Pokemon has a higher level than 40 or lower than 13.

Simply run around the tall grass and wait for the encounter, which is the tedious part since they may or may not appear. 

They will change routes and you may need to transfer around the map when you can. Save before using your Max Repels, so you can simply reload if you lose all of them.

Here’s also an interesting trick: if you encounter one of them and they run away, check out your Pokedex. 

You will be able to see where they are currently, so just Fly to the location, and do the hunting there. It still takes time but at least now you know where they are, it makes things faster.

Battle Strategy:

Both Latios and Latias are not that hard to beat. The problem is that they run away too fast, which is why other players are forced to use their Master Balls. 

Don’t worry because if you have a Pokemon that has Mean Look, then you’ll stand a chance. Another good tactic is having a Wobbuffet which has the Shadow Tag ability. 

Shadow Tag prevents any enemy from running away. Wobbuffet itself is tanky and has counterattack moves. 

Spam the Poke Balls to catch them while Wobbuffet can tank their attacks, which aren’t that deadly, anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Legendary is the best one to use the Master Ball on?

It would probably be Latios or Latias (whichever you choose). The reason is that it is tedious to hunt these two down and they run away so fast that you need to find them again. 

The pain is finding them and not so much the fight. The other Legendary Pokemon fight can be reset anyway if you save accordingly.

Which Legendary Pokemon in Emerald is worth investing in?

Rayquaza seems to be the consensus. You also get it before fighting the Elite Four, so it can strengthen your team. On top of that, it is level 70 so it adds some firepower to your team.

Should I get the Regis?

The answer is up to you if you’re willing to spend the time. However, we already solved the Braille puzzles, so getting them wouldn’t be that hard. 

While they’re a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to combat, they’ll do well for collection purposes.
