Pokemon Unbound is one of the most popular ROM hacks thanks to its fresh storyline, lively characters, and revamped mechanics.

But just like any Pokemon game, Pokemon Unbound also had certain HM acquisition methods that players needed to figure out so they could progress through the story.

HMs (or Hidden Machines) allow you to destroy or remove obstacles on your way and traverse different terrains and bodies of water. If you’re struggling to find these HMs in the Borrius Region, then you’ve come to the right place.

In this guide, I’ll show you all HM locations in Pokemon Unbound and what you need to do before you can use each one.

The HMs in this ROM hack are given to you by different NPCs. From random hikers to Gym Leaders, let’s find them all!

HM01: Cut

Obtaining the hm01: cut in pokemon unbound

Requirements:

  • Access to Crater Town
  • Beaten Gym Leader at the Crater Town Gym
  • Vision Badge (Using Cut outside of battle)

Cut is typically the first HM you can obtain in any game, and the same is true for Pokemon Unbound.

Cut can be obtained as a gift from a mountain climber NPC in the KBT Expressway. This HM requires you to beat Vega at the Crater Town Gym first before you can get it.

After beating Vega, head south of Crater Town, and the KBT Expressway entrance should be accessible.

During your first visit here, you will see a cutscene, and you will be abducted and taken to Cinder Volcano, where you will have to fight Shadow Ivory and Boss Zeff.

After beating them, Hoopa will appear and transport you into KBT again, and the Mountain Climber NPC will be there, ready to give you HM01 or Cut.

HM02: Fly

Obtaining the hm02: fly in pokemon unbound

Requirements:

  • Access to Fallshore City and Tehl Town
  • Beat Mel in a Gym Battle
  • Fall Badge (Use Fly Outside of Battle)

Fly is one of the most useful HMs to obtain because it also unlocks fast travel. The TM for Fly in Pokemon Unbound is obtained from Mel, the Gym Leader of the Fallshore City Gym, after beating him.

Mel is one of the gym leaders that you can’t battle directly. You’d have to find him in Tehl Town and make him come back to his gym in Fallshore so that you can challenge him to a battle. His gym battle rules are also different.

With Inverse Battle mechanics, type matchups are inverted. All of Mel’s Pokemon are normal types, but in this scenario, fighting-type moves are not very effective. So, bring some non-Fighting-type STAB moves that hit hard, and you should be good.

After beating Mel, he will stop you outside his gym and give you HM02 Fly. You can use it immediately after that.

HM03: Surf

Requirements:

  • Access to Tarmigan Town
  • Defeated Successor Maxima at Tarmigan Town
  • Battery Badge (Use Surf Outside of Battle)

The Surf HM is given to you after you have defeated your rival and gained the ability to mega-evolve your Pokemon. From the Tarmigan Pokemon Center, take the east route heading north to Route 12.

During your first visit here, you will be stopped and challenged by your rival. After beating him, Professor Log will arrive, and you will be given HM03 Surf.

HM04: Strength

Obtaining the hm04: strength in pokemon unbound

Requirements:

  • Access to Epidemy Town
  • Fall Badge (Using Strength Outside of Battle)

The Strength HM will allow you to move large boulders, which is given to you by an NPC in Epidemy Town.

As soon as you have access to this location, you can get the HM immediately. After getting to Epidemy Town, head to the westernmost house.

Inside you’ll find three NPCs. Talk to the Blackbelt on the right of the table, and he will give you HM04 Strength. However, you will need the Fall Badge to be able to use this outside of battle.

HM05: Dive

Obtaining the hm05: dive in pokemon unbound

Requirements:

  • Become a Pokemon Champion
  • 250,000 Pokemon Dollars for purchasing /HM05

Dive is one of the post-game HMs in Pokemon Unbound as you can only obtain it after becoming Champion of the Pokemon League.

After beating the Pokemon League, fly to Seaport City and head east to Captain Davy’s Shipyard.

Look for Captain Davy and talk to him. He will then sell you the gear for 250,000 Pokemon Dollars. He will also give you HM05 Dive as a freebie.

HM06: Rock Smash

Obtaining the hm06: rock smash in pokemon unbound

Requirements:

  • Access to Blizzard City
  • Wings Badge (Use Rock Smash Outside of Battle)

Rock Smash is needed to progress through the main story, and you can get it from the Mountain Climber NPC in Blizard City. Yes, this is the one that the Cut NPC was referring to.

After a long and tiring journey to Blizzard City through Route 8, heal your Pokemon in the Pokemon Center first.

From there, go east and take the first turn. Go to the KBT Expressway entrance and take a right to the house beside it.

On the ground floor, there will be a door that you need to interact with to open. Head inside and talk to the Mountain Climber, and he will give you HM06 Rock Smash.

HM07: Waterfall

Obtaining the hm07: waterfall in pokemon unbound

Requirements:

  • Access to Polder Town
  • Defeat Gym Leader Tessy
  • Swamp Badge (Use Waterfall Outside of Battle)

Waterfall will allow you to climb and descend falls. You can get it from Tessy, the Gym Leader of the Polder Town Gym.

Her gym can be quite puzzling because your Pokemon changes their type to the first two moves in their arsenal.

Tessy specializes in Water-types Pokemon, and rainy weather boosts her power. Just bring some Grass and Electric Pokemon with STAB moves as their first two moves, and she should be a breeze.

After you beat her, she will give you the Swamp Badge and HM07 Waterfall as a gift.

HM08: Rock Climb

Obtaining the hm08: rock climb in pokemon unbound

Requirements:

  • Access to Gurun Town
  • Ring Badge (Use Rock Climb Outside of Battle)

Rock Climb is used to ascend and descend tall rocky terrain, and it can be obtained from a construction worker on Route 17.

We have a detailed guide on how to traverse Route 17 and 18 in Pokemon Unbound if you are having trouble with navigation.

But from Gurun Town’s Pokemon Center, you just need to head south. Keep crossing the bridges, and as long as you’re heading south and east, you are in the right direction.

When you arrive on Route 17, you’ll find three workers. Talk to them, and one will give you the HM for Rock Climb.

Conclusion

Now you know where all the HMs in Pokemon Unbound are located. Most of them are given to you for free, and you don’t even have to teach them to your Pokemon.

Thanks to Pokemon Unbound’s nifty feature, all Pokemon that can naturally learn an HM will automatically be able to use it.

No teaching or deleting moves are required, as long as you have the HM.
